Summary

This course aims to provide candidates with the basic knowledge and skills to be able to safely operate a
Gritter and Snowplough.This course is for people who want to gain the NPORS N802 category

Course Objectives

At the end of the course of training the trainee operator will be able to answer questions on
and perform the following: –

  • Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator.
  • Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for
    the particular machine to be used.
  • Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and
    explain their functions.
  • Be able to locate and identify key controls and explain their functions
  • Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for a refuse collection operator.
  • Conduct all pre-operational and running checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative
    requirements.
  • Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area.
  • Prepare the gritter/snowplough for use and operate machinery safely and efficiently.
  • Attach and set trailers, mounted and PTO drives ready for operation.
  • Operate machinery safely and efficiently.
  • Environmental considerations.
  • Storage and transport of implements and attachments.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation.
  • Carry out end of shift shut down procedures.

Teaching and Assessment

  • The theory teaching is classroom based. The practical training is carried out on our own test site or your site
    (as arranged) using the machines actually used for the test.
  • The theory test is written and consists of 25 questions. 5 Short written answers and 20 multiple choice. The practical test assesses the candidate’s operational skill in a variety of tasks operating the machine.

  • NPORS N802 Gritter and Snowplough

  • Dependent upon previous experience.

This course is for people who want to gain the NPORS N029 category.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course of training the trainee operator will be able to answer questions on
and perform the following: –

  • Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as a refuse collection
    operator.
  • Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used.
  • Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
  • Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for a refuse collection operator.
  • Conduct all pre-operational and running checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements.
  • Manual handling specific to handling of waste containers.
  • Waste acceptance criteria.
  • Working with a crew.
  • Basic banksman signalling.
  • Health and hygiene.
  • Configure vehicle for travel.
  • Travelling on various terrain.
  • Operating in restricted areas.
  • Empty bins safely
  • Depositing waste in landfill and transfer stations.
  • Carry out end of shift shut down procedures.
